Some recent projects

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 3:09 PM
Here are a couple of projects I've done recently for the larp group I'm affiliated with behind the cut )
I am going to be writing up some pdf guides for how to draft patterns in certain styles for FashionStudentsOnline and I am looking for suggestions of styles that people are interested in (I'm posting here to ask because unfortunately even though the site is getting 75+ visitors a day they are shy!). I mostly do evening / special occasion wear so to be honest I have limited brain function when it comes to every day wear. I will be focussed on my own designs, special occasion dresses mainly, but I know a lot of sewers would like to know how to make some more basic things and so I thought I could address that need as well.

As a sewer, someone who sews a lot and is comfortable making complicated adjustments to patterns to make them fit you, you will find creating a pattern from a sloper that already fits you to be much much simpler. If you are one of these people, what styles would you be interested in knowing how to create?

Links to pre-existing patterns are good, or descriptions (note I will not be buying any patterns or studying intensely any of these examples that are shown but they will give me an idea of what people would like). I was thinking a simple button up blouse with one pocket over the breast as well as an A-line shift dress but that's because those are the only clothes I wear other than tshirts and jeans so...what would YOU want?

Question about fixing color

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 1:17 PM
I am going to make a wallhanging with fabric that kids have pressed leaves onto. Does anyone know how I can fix the color from the leaves onto the fabric?

Thanks!

Magically tempting - with free shipping

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 11:59 AM
The November sampler pack is still available - two left! Also, on clearance is my Lavender and Spikenard vegan sugar cane scrub (no bone char used in the sugar.) Sweet, earthy, and awesome after shaving your legs. And also - free shipping WORLDWIDE is still going on until December 1st. The shop shuts down in December because of my wedding.

Also, please welcome the very first of my perfume sprays: Oh So Very, inspired by the movie Heathers and a small club of its fans. Shipping is US only because this fragrance contains alcohol and USPS will not ship alcohol overseas. All oil-based goodies, however, are still fair game!

nutcracker as in the ballet NUTCRACKER

  • 10:54 AM
Hey everyone...

I'm planning to make a sheath dress similar to the photo below for a holiday party... I don't usually use patterns as I find them way too complicated... I'm more of a tutorial kinda gal. With that said, would anybody know of any online tutorials for a dress similar to this? Or a REALLY easy pattern? It's moreso for the bodice than anything else...

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks...

Inspired by Missoni

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 12:30 PM
My mother's always going on about Missoni, but it wasn't until I had dinner at the Missoni Hotel in Edinburgh last night that I got what all the fuss is about. I came away with an exhibition catalogue and the strong impression that the Missonis are hugely influenced by quilting. I don't know if they ever made any quilts, as many of their designs look suspiciously like quilts but turn out to be tapestries. I'm fairly convinced that the following really is a quilt, and I am planning to copy it if I can. My current design (ignore the extra vertical line on the right, I ended up making it wider than I'd originally thought I would) would make a large sofa quilt that could at a pinch be used as a small bedspread, which would be ideal for my best friend. I'd probably turn the colours slightly more towards earthy tones, while still keeping the focus on red, and Kaffe Fassett fabrics would be ideal. At the moment I'm trying to work out how many fabrics I'd need (there are far too many tempting fabrics there, but they are also expensive), and what proportion to assign to dark, medium and light.

Trailer Fraud

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 12:00 AM

When a trailer misrepresents the movie it advertises. When you view the actual movie, you see the trailer has nothing to do with the narrative, characters or plot. You are a victim of trailer fraud.

#1 : "Boy that film sucked !"
#2 " Yeah, wtf did we just watch ?"
#1 : "Dunno, the trailer looked good."
Both : "Trailer Fraud !"

Fabric Scraps

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 9:15 PM
What are some projects I can make out of fabric scraps (and by scraps, I mean .5-1 yard)?

I've been getting a lot of fabric donations lately from various grandmas and while I really like the prints, I'm not so sure what to do with them, besides make little tiny bags (I do plan on making a lot of these for Christmas).

Is there anything else that's cute, practical or wearable that I can make? Thanks!
